We’re very pleased to welcome Wiktoria to our team as a Part I assistant. Wiktoria joins us having completed her Part I degree at the University of Greenwich where her final project, ‘Light Cliffs of Kerry’, explored bamboo construction in a coastal landscape populated by bioluminescent plankton.
Office Shutdown /
Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas from us all, here at Denizen Works. Here’s to a belting 2023.
Building Beauty Shortlist /
The Floating Church was commended at this year’s Building Beauty Awards, organised by the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust. The awards evening was held at the Bloomberg building and Lord Foster was on hand to present the certificates. He didn’t say so, but I think he liked our project best.
Tokyo University /
We were delighted to be invited to present our work at the Kato Lab of Tokyo University. Kato Lab, led by professor Koichi Kato, is an architectural unit for masters students at the Tokyo University specialising in researching about architecture history, contemporary theories and local vernacular in the Western world. The talk was very well received by everyone and we would love to do more of these in Japan.
Architect of the Year /
Denizen Works have been crowned Building Design Architect of the Year for 2022 having picked up the award for Individual House Architect of the Year, Small Projects Architect of the Year and the Gold Award at this year’s award ceremony. Quite an honour.
The Guardian /
After a great trip to visit the House at Ardteatle with Olly Wainwright and a few other journalists, the House at Loch Awe has begun to appear in the press including Olly’s feature in Guardian. Jolly good it is too.
AJ Cover /
Mannal House graces the cover of the Architects Journal for the next month or so. All down to our friend Gilbert.
Summer Site Visit /
We have started the early stages of another project in the west of Scotland, once again we feel very lucky to be working in such a lovely location, but we are sure we will do it justice.
Atlantic /
Denizen Works had their first trip over the Atlantic this month with a couple of projects kicking off across the pond. June also saw Murray meeting up with Gordon Raphael (for the first time in too many years) for his book launch about his work with The Strokes and the good times at Filthy MacNasty’s in Islington. A month of both nostalgia and new beginnings.
Ceramics Workshop /
Work continues on one of our smallest project in the office for a ceramics studio in west London designed to include workspace and quiet reading room. As ever, we encourage our clients to get involved in the design process and love when we receive sketches like this one.
57'10 Lecture Series /
Murray was delighted to present some of our work as part of the Student Lecture Series at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment. There was a nice turnout and a lovely evening afterwards.
In a busy month, Murray also chaired the RIAS Awards jury with results due to hit the press in early May 2022. It was a great privilege, as always, to hear from the design teams and clients behind some great work.
New Project /
We have recently started work on a new project in the Cairngorms, where we've been testing a series of approaches to an extraordinary site, formerly used as an agricultural steading. Concealed shoes and Rowan trees have formed part of our early thinking and we're excited to see how the project develops over the coming months.
House at Loch Awe /
The Christmas tree, and our clients, have moved into the House at Loch Awe. We looking forward to having some professional photos taken in the New Year and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
